The role of the family in society

It has been said that the family is the bedrock of society and can be proven by the fact that all over the world every society is structured by the same pattern. A man and woman marry and form a family. This process is repeated multiple times making multiple families which form villages, regions, and eventually countries. When several countries come together they form a continent and all of the continents make up the world. The foundation of this entire process is the family. I propose in this essay that the family has a crucial role in society by being a model of love in three different aspects; love for the children, love between husband and wife, and finally love in promoting moral values.

As people we are created to be visual with a need to see illustrated models of things that are important to our lives, especially the love relationship between children and their parents. As children we learn everything by watching the examples or models of others such as eating and walking. The family functions the same way. For example, sons who have seen their parents abuse alcohol or show extreme violence towards one another, practice these same activities. The role of the family is to give a good model so that others within the society can imitate resulting in the edification of the society. God’s Word – the Bible, teaches us that an earthly father is an earthly example of God, the heavenly Father. The heavenly Father is patient, kind, loving, and always willing to spend time in an intimate, personal relationship with His children. The earthly father is to be a living model of patience and kindness, showing love through his intimate relationship with his children.

One of the most important roles of the family in society is to show the much needed model of love between husband and wife. The ultimate example of such love is the way that Jesus Christ loves His church. He loves her so much that He nourishes and cherishes her on a daily basis even giving His life on the cross for her. The husband – wife relationship is to model Jesus Christ’s pattern of love by loving each other on a daily basis, cherishing and nourishing each other as the most precious thing in their lives. Such a model is greatly needed within society because in most cases there is a lack of models for families and individuals to see and imitate. If these principles were to be applied then the society would radically change for the better giving people happiness as each generation follows in the footsteps of the previous one.

During this crucial time in history while moral values are declining, the family must love moral values by living according to and promoting them throughout the easily misguided society. Many values could be listed but the focus will be kept on the ones that are hot topics in the world today being: sexual immorality, homosexuality, and abortion. The family must be a model and demonstrate the fact that the sexual relationship has a place only in marriage between a husband and wife. Mothers and fathers must teach their children about the importance of maintaining their virginity until marriage and that there is no such thing as safe sex outside of marriage. The family must promote marriage as being between one man and one woman and that any other marital relationship outside of this is harmful as well as dangerous. Families must discourage abortion because it is taking innocent lives. If society aborts its future generations then who will be here to welcome the future?

The family has a decisive role having the capacity and responsibility to impact the entire society by its positive example. The parents must show love towards their children by spending time with them and building intimate, personal relationships. Spouses must love each other according to the pattern of Jesus Christ. In order to fulfill its role in society the family will educate children in moral values so that they will mature and pass on these values to the future generations making society a safe and happy place for all people to live and enjoy.

    • Thank you for your kind words. If you have read many of the comments you have seen that the majority of them are negative. It is nice to have some positive feedback from time to time. Be blessed.

  1. I loved your write-up! It is so important to see the role the family should have on kids as society isn’t always the best influence for them. I want to bring these concepts into my future family

  2. This article is one of few recent ones that delved into the very heart of our current society’s woes by highlighting topical moral perversions like homosexuality and how the family remain the only hop of salvaging our marally defficient society. God bless you. Keep the fire burning!

  3. It’s a nice essay huh? this is the best source of information for my research work, I think. I should include this one, thanks for sharing. .

  4. this is crazy. why is the only love acceptable love between a man and a woman? homosexuality is not a sin. This idea is ridiculous and short-sighted. it is most likely genetic, and therefore MADE BY GOD. While some moral degradations in society spring from the lack of morality being taught in the household (note: morality-not the same as religion, one is perfectly able to be a decent human being who contributes to society without needing religion to guide them, it is choice we choose to make and it is ignorant to believe no Christians are immoral, let’s look back at the Bible for a quick example, when stoning was a justified punishment for adultery. should that not be a ‘hot topic’ to discuss over dinner?), it cannot be solved simply by showing them what Jesus’ ideal family looks like. A nurturing, caring environment can still be created for a child with two fathers, a single mother, a sibling or their grandparents.

The role of the family is to look after the child in love, but also to educate them on the realities of the world around them: they should inquire as to the pros and cons of abortion, and the reasons why sometimes people need them, they should know their family will support them if they break a rule to test their boundaries, they should be encouraged to know as much as possible about (god forbid) other religions and other cultures, and to make THEIR OWN CHOICES. Without this freedom of choice, and freedom to practice or not to practice the religion of their choosing allows society to move forward, to progress. Of course this needs to be coupled with ideas of what is right and what is wrong, but it is naïve to only teach a child ONE view about everything, they should learn to find their own moral compass, else people start to act behind the guise of religion without taking responsibility for their own actions.

  5. Hi Millie,
By whose standard is homosexuality not a sin?

If I understand you correctly, you are saying that its okay for the same love that exist between a man and a woman, to exist between two men or two women. Should human beings be guided by feelings and sink lower than the animals, that is unhealthy, unholy and destructive.

I don’t know which god you are referring too, but I doubt it is the living God, the Creator of all things including yourself, who has given rules for living on his earth for a period of time, and has outlined the consequences of violating those laws.

By what law is one perfectly able to be a decent human being without religious guide?

Choice determines destiny, you seem to hold the view that whatever looks and feels good do it for personal pleasure. Know this, that there is a way that seems right to a man, but the end of that way is death.

Your view is absolutely absurd, to think that two fathers can create a healthy environment for a child to be nurtured with rights beliefs and values.

Do you really understand the law of boundaries? There is a divine authority to which all cultures must submit, cultures are not superior to the law of nature.

Based on your reply to Erik; I can make a fair judgment on which side of the fence you are, but I must tell you that the Lord Jesus Christ loves you, and has a wonderful plan for your life, I pray you would accept His love, and change your point of view before it is to late. You live because He sustains you in life, one day you will die and be called upon to give account to Him.

  7. hey, from the biblical point of view what you say isperfectly clear. and may thing should e taken into accout as real facts, common sense more than religious sense. But in my opinion this article doesn’t applies to my own faith, my relgion, my way of life. Anyway i agree with most of it, except when you remark that family as made out of a woman and a man, that’s the other way around in my belief, which says that if there is real love and sancticity, god is within it. eve gay marriage.

  8. If we build the family around Christ´s principles including faith, payer, repentance, forgiveness, respect, love, compassion, work and wholesome fun, home or family can be place of refuge peace and immense joy

  9. thank you so much for showing us the role of a family in society
.however one should note that a family isnt only husband and wife as western style,it includes relatives from both husband and wife.s families.
