In order to understand the importance of the birth of Jesus we must first understand why He had to be born.
We (people) are born into sin (i.e. sinners from birth)
Sin can be defined as:
disobeying what the Word of God says
going our own way apart from God
We are slaves to sin
we practice sin continuously
we could not stop even if we wanted
The price or cost of sin is death.
we needed someone to pay the price for our sin
we needed someone to set us free from our slavery to sin
Jesus was the Promised One that would free His people from their sin
How was He able to do it?
He was not born under the slavery of sin as all the rest of humanity
He was not of the seed of Adam (or born of a man’s seed)
He was totally man because of His birth through the Virgin Mary.
He was flesh and blood
Just like mankind
Because He lived a sinless life, although He was tempted
He was able to die on the cross to pay the penalty for our sin (He did not have to pay for His own sin)
He is also able to set us free from the slavery of sin
by His resurrection from the dead
He had the power to overcome sin and death
He has given us that same power (Holy Spirit)
Now with His power, which is His Holy Spirit within us, we are able to
live a life that is pleasing to God by following Jesus’ example of obedience.
We are no longer practicing sin and going our own way
We are practicing obedience to God and going His way
Without the birth of Jesus we would not be able to celebrate because the New Life He has given to us, those who follow Him, would not be the reality that it is today.
So on behalf of the Brewer’s, Elena, Erik and Abigail, we want to wish you a very Merry Christmas and we hope that you can also celebrate with us as one who has been set free from the penalty and slavery of sin through your faith (taking God at His Word) in the Lord Jesus Christ.
