If you are against capital punishment, then I would ask you to take a look at this article. What message do we send to the victim and the family members of the victim if those who murdered this young man do not pay with their own lives? Are the lives of the criminals more valuable than the life of the victim? What does God have to say on this subject? Let’s see!
God clearly states that if a person murders another person, then the murderer must be put to death. Some may claim that this is under the Law therefore, we do not have to observe it today. Let’s see what God had to say on the subject before the Law was given.
Again, we see that God requires the murderer to pay with his own life. So, another objection may be, “that is the Old Testament and we live under the New, therefore, it still does not apply to us”. That sounds correct but let’s see.
The instructions of the Old T. and Old Covenant are still valid today, especially universal moral laws such as “do not murder” as well as the punishment for murderers. Also we can turn to Paul once again in II Timothy 3:
Again we see that ALL Scripture is for teaching (instruction or doctrine), even the teachings of the Old T.Others may object saying that Jesus teaches “turn the other cheek“. This is true but I would like to point out 2 problems with using this quote for capital punishment: 1) the context is not “murder” when Jesus says “turn the other cheek” 2) You are not the one who carries out the capital punishment for the crime, the State does. God clearly teaches about the job of the State:
3 For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority ? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same ; 4 for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid ; for it does not bear the sword for nothing ; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. 5 Therefore it is necessary to be in subjection, not only because of wrath, but also for conscience’ sake. 6 For because of this you also pay taxes, for rulers are servants of God, devoting themselves to this very thing. 7 Render to all what is due them: tax to whom tax is due; custom to whom custom ; fear to whom fear ; honor to whom honor. (Romans 13)
The State carries out the punishment. Does this mean that there is no forgiveness for murderers (sinners)? No!!! There is forgiveness but that does not negate the consequences of the action. If you are sexual immoral, contract AIDS and then ask God for forgiveness, He will forgive you, but the consequence of your action is that you are now infected with the AIDS virus. If you murder someone, you can be forgiven by God yet the consequence is that you must pay with your life. By applying this method, the life of the victim is honored and future murderers will be discouraged from committing this terrible crime.
