To all the dads out there (and especially my own dad), have a great and wonderful day, blessed by the Lord. It is a privilege to have a father and be a father at the same time. As men and fathers, we have a great responsibility to raise our kids in the ways of the Lord.
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22)
It is our calling to lead our families in every aspect of life, including the spiritual aspect. Do not worry if you do not know what to do or how to do it. God gives you an easy plan.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. (Psalm 1)
Delight (enjoy) in the Word of God. Study, think about, and talk about the Word of God day and night and God will guide you step by step in the process. As you grow in the knowledge of God through His Word, then you will be able to share that knowledge with your children and “train them up in the Way”. It is never too early to start teaching children the Word of God. In fact, God encourages us to use every opportunity to teach the Word to our children.
4 “Hear, O Israel ! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one ! 5 “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 ” You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 “You shall bind them as a sign on your hand and they shall be as frontals on your forehead . 9 “You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates. (Deut 6)
Talk about the Bible when you are at home. Turn off the t.v. and video games while you sit around the supper table and have conversations with your family. Guide those conversations to the Word of God. When you do activities with your children, when you are riding in the car together, use those moments as time to discuss Biblical things (prepare something ahead of time). Before going to bed, share a bed time story from the Word of God. When you wake up in the morning, have a quite time with your family. Also, have Bible verses and themes from the Bible posted around your house, things which can be discussed with the children. Children are like little sponges, soaking up everything that you have to offer. Teach them the Word while they are young and receptive so that as the grow older, they will want to know more.
Have a happy Fathers’ Day and may God bless you and your family.
