The dangers of witchcraft (black and white magic)

I am preparing to teach this Friday night’s lesson for the youth meeting. I have a request to teach on the dangers of black magic (witchcraft, fortune-telling, tarot cards, horoscope, etc). I want to present the information to you so that I can think through the subject myself. I would love to hear what you think. I hope this lesson will be good for those who call themselves “Christian” yet live by pagan practices (and may not even know it). We will take a look at both the Old and New Testaments to see what the Word of God teaches on this subject. In Moldova, where over 90% of the population claims to be “Christian” many, many people turn to fortune-tellers, tarot cards, and horoscopes to lean what their future holds. Some say that it is just simple fun to read your horoscope on a daily basis. Just remember, what gets into your mind can linger for much longer that you ever planned. If you just crack the door for the Devil, he will remove the hinges and bring an army with him. There are others in Moldova, who also claim to be Christian, yet at the same time practice “black magic”, by casting spells and curses on people, homes, and even entire families. Can a person be a genuine Christian and practice these things? That is what we want to determine. Also, if you have opened this door of evil, is there a way to close it? If someone is casting spells on you and trying to curse you, what can you do to protect yourself?

I. The Bible teaches that Christians, people of God, are forbidden to practice any kind of magic (both black and white magic).

10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium , or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 “For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD ; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you. 13 “You shall be blameless before the LORD your God. 14 “For those nations, which you shall dispossess, listen to those who practice witchcraft and to diviners, but as for you, the LORD your God has not allowed you to do so. (Deut. 18)

These were the practices of the pagans who lived in the land before Israel entered. They were pagan and lived like pagans, even offering their children as human sacrifices to their deranged gods. God solemnly warns His people before they enter the land. He tells them that they cannot practice these things. He then explains what they are.

1. DivinationLatin origin – divinare- to look into the future with the help of spirits. A diviner is one who claims to see the future (which lies in God’s hand and God’s alone) and will reveal that future to you for a price. Paul gives us some insight into why people practice divination and witchcraft. He does so in Acts 16:16-19. It is practiced out of greed and desire to make a profit at all costs. This can be done through a medium (one who asks questions to the spirits) or through a spiritist (one who is in contact with the spirits) or through one who speaks with the dead. None of these are good actions because they open the door to the negative aspect of the spiritual world which leads to many, many problems.

2. Witchcraft – influencing the course of events by using mysterious or supernatural forces. This is directly connected to the previous. Once they see the future through divination then they try to change the events, either trying to keep them from happening or benefiting from them. This is usually done by casting spells or incantations. This may be performed by a female (witch) or by a male (sorcerer).

God calls these things detestable (repulsive) and cast judgment on those who practice them.

II. God announces the punishment for practicing witchcraft and it is manifested in 3 forms; 1) personal judgment 2) national judgment 3) eternal judgment.

26 ‘Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy ; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine. 27 ‘Now a man or a woman who is a medium or a spiritist shall surely be put to death. They shall be stoned with stones, their bloodguiltiness is upon them.’ ” (Leviticus 20:26-27)

Personal judgment is the death penalty. During the days of ancient Israel, God commanded the authorities to carry out capital punishment. We no longer live under a theocracy but that does not stop personal judgment for those who practice these sins. Just like immorality, which was punishable by death then, still brings a death sentence with it through the form of many STD’s and specifically HIV/AIDS.

Personal judgment is followed by national judgment. If the people are tolerant to witchcraft and allow it to be practiced openly among them, then they will reap the consequences. Did you notice what God said He was going to do to the nations that practiced witchcraft openly? “God will drive them out before you”. They will be driven out of the land. In another passage the phrase is “spewed or vomited out”. Could it be just mere coincidence that 4 citizens leave Moldova every single day, never to return? This is a nation that claims to be Christian and yet at the same time openly accepts witchcraft.

The worst of all three forms of judgment is the final; eternal judgment, completely separated from the presence of God.

“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8)

The lake of fire awaits those who practice witchcraft and do not repent of their sins. Before physical death takes place, those who practice witchcraft have a chance to repent and be forgiven for their sins. They will not receive the penalty of eternal judgment. This process is mentioned by the Apostle Paul in Acts 26:17-18. It happens by believing in Jesus Christ and receiving Him as you Lord and Savior. He becomes the Master of your life. This is mentioned in the Gospel of John 1:12.

III. Do not listen to those who practice witchcraft because they are driven by greed, they will lie to you, and they are actually ineffectual when it comes to changing God’s plans.

We have seen in Acts 16:16-19 that they are driven by greed and the desire to make a profit at all costs. Jeremiah 27:9-10 explains that they will lie to you in order to keep you satisfied and coming back for more (with your hard earned money of course). Finally, Daniel 2:27–28 explains that they are ineffectual, no matter how much you promise them. The king threatened them with death if they could not use their powers to answer something for him about the future. They were unable to do it. The only person who saved them was Daniel, because he appealed to God instead of witchcraft. If you want to be a sucker then throw your hard earned money down the drain by going to psychics and fortune-teller. Just know that not only do you make yourself out to be a fool but you also bring God’s judgment on your head. If you want to throw money away, why not donate it to charity or a good cause instead of supporting evil?

IV. If you are a born again believer then you have nothing to fear from those who practice witchcraft or try to use it against you.

You are protected by God in every situation, even if someone is casting spells on you. God promises to work the evil that is thrown your way for your own good. Let’s turn to Paul once again in his epistle to the church in Rome.

28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose. (Romans 8:28)

So my dear friend, do you play around with magic/witchcraft? Do you read your daily horoscope (just for fun of course)? Are you opening yourself up to judgment by appealing to psychics and fortune-tellers to learn about the future? Are you putting your nation at risk by being tolerant of those who practice witchcraft? Maybe it is time for you to repent and turn to the Lord for help so that you can take part in building the future of your nation instead of participating in its destruction. May God help us obey Him fully.

  1. This is another interesting post. All based on myth and misconception. Let me lay facts out to u. There is no such thing as white or black Magick. It is all the same. Just depends on the intent. U like quotes lets give u a quote from the wiccans rede.

    The Wiccan Rede
    (Full Version)

Bide within the Law you must, in perfect Love and perfect Trust.
Live you must and let to live, fairly take and fairly give.

For tread the Circle thrice about to keep unwelcome spirits out.
To bind the spell well every time, let the spell be said in rhyme.

Light of eye and soft of touch, speak you little, listen much.
Honor the Old Ones in deed and name,
let love and light be our guides again.

Deosil go by the waxing moon, chanting out the joyful tune.
Widdershins go when the moon doth wane,
and the werewolf howls by the dread wolfsbane.

When the Lady’s moon is new, kiss the hand to Her times two.
When the moon rides at Her peak then your heart’s desire seek.

Heed the North winds mighty gale, lock the door and trim the sail.
When the Wind blows from the East, expect the new and set the feast.

When the wind comes from the South, love will kiss you on the mouth.
When the wind whispers from the West, all hearts will find peace and rest.

Nine woods in the Cauldron go, burn them fast and burn them slow.
Birch in the fire goes to represent what the Lady knows.

Oak in the forest towers with might, in the fire it brings the God’s
insight. Rowan is a tree of power causing life and magick to flower.

Willows at the waterside stand ready to help us to the Summerland.
Hawthorn is burned to purify and to draw faerie to your eye.

Hazel-the tree of wisdom and learning adds its strength to the bright fire burning.
White are the flowers of Apple tree that brings us fruits of fertility.

Grapes grow upon the vine giving us both joy and wine.
Fir does mark the evergreen to represent immortality seen.

Elder is the Lady’s tree burn it not or cursed you’ll be.
Four times the Major Sabbats mark in the light and in the dark.

As the old year starts to wane the new begins, it’s now Samhain.
When the time for Imbolc shows watch for flowers through the snows.

When the wheel begins to turn soon the Beltane fires will burn.
As the wheel turns to Lamas night power is brought to magick rite.

Four times the Minor Sabbats fall use the Sun to mark them all.
When the wheel has turned to Yule light the log the Horned One rules.

In the spring, when night equals day time for Ostara to come our way.
When the Sun has reached it’s height time for Oak and Holly to fight.

Harvesting comes to one and all when the Autumn Equinox does fall.
Heed the flower, bush, and tree by the Lady blessed you’ll be.

Where the rippling waters go cast a stone, the truth you’ll know.
When you have and hold a need, harken not to others greed.

With a fool no season spend or be counted as his friend.
Merry Meet and Merry Part bright the cheeks and warm the heart.

Mind the Three-fold Laws you should three times bad and three times good.
When misfortune is enow wear the star upon your brow.

Be true in love this you must do unless your love is false to you.

These Eight words the Rede fulfill:

“An Ye Harm None, Do What Ye will”

This is what 95% of witches follow. Like all religions and beliefs u get bad people in it. But generalizing that all witchs are bad is misguided. Spells and rituals done by the majority of witches are used to help others by asking for guidance by the spirits of our ancestors.

So as u see u have a very wrong impression of witchcraft. U attack things U do not understand. I hope this post helps u understand what witchcraft really is. A nature loving, god (sun) and goddess (earth) worshiping religion which on the whole wishes to bring no harm to anyone, no matter what u believe.

    • THank you. This is one of the most refreshing replies I’ve seen on a god botherers site. Its pointless trying to explain to these bigoted christians I fear.

  2. Good article. I would say there are many genuine Christians that think horoscopes are like fortune cookies, harmless and something fun to read. In light of scripture though, we are without excuses that such practices are from the darkness that God hates. As His children we are called to expose the darkness, but in many cases we fail to even recognize it. I think it’s a poor witness and grieves the Spirit when we commit such a sin as entertaining ourselves with evil and allowing that influence to lead us from the Truth, but a true believer cannot live by that as an identity and practitioner. We cannot cast spells and praise God from the same condition of the heart.
Gods hatred for witchcraft in all its forms is made known to us in scripture, just as is pointed out in this article. There is no escaping His judgment or justifying our sin, our hope is in grace to be forgiven by His love demonstrated on the Cross for those who would call themselves wiccan, witches, fortune-tellers, warlocks, occultists and the like so they may know redeeming Love and the forgiveness of sin.
As for wiccans, it’s whatever people want to define it these days. The term came up in the 1950’s and over the next 5 decades people made a lot of money writing books reshaping it to fit their agenda, borrowing the concepts from lots of other world religions like karma from buddhism and in the 70’s it started to focus on goddess worship to tie into the feminist movement. Even though many of my closest friends were wiccan before coming to Christ, it always seemed like a shallow silly, “rhyming” religion full of hurt girls (mostly) wanting to feel special and powerful.
As for my own experience, I am thankful God struck fear into me. I was downtown in a café friendly to people with alternative lifestyles if you will, and in an upstairs room with my friends. A guy walks in and sits down and I felt a presence enter the room with him that made me feel sick and uncomfortable. A few minutes later another guy walks in and at that point I turned to the girl next to me who was a satanic teacher and said, those two Christians and they are praying. At first she glanced at them and said, nah, they have come before (Christians were not allowed to patronage, but often yelled at us from the sidewalk outside). I told her no, they were praying so she spun around the asked them, are you Christians? The room went quiet and the older of the two with a big smile on his face said, Yes and went on to proclaim the gospel. As he was being pushed out he stopped and looked at me and I stared back so full of anger I don’t remember what he said exactly to me. I just remember in that moment I was struck with such a fear, it was like nothing I had ever experienced, my mind went completely blank. I could not deny the presence of the Lord and for the next several years the darkness I was in was exposed as Christians prayed for me, shared scripture with me, and I both hated and feared them until the day I was saved.
After Christ gave me a new life and identity in Him I struggled to know what that was, what that meant, how to surrender to Him daily and renew my mind with the Word which is a battle for every believer, but no matter how many times I turned back to my vomit and I could not stay in it, I could not love it, I could find only torment and pain in my unwillingness at times to be broken before the Lord so He could provide the safety and peace I so desperately needed after leaving my demons. Can someone love the Lord and practice such things? Perhaps for a season, but its a season of hell worse then before they were known by Him.
“For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die— but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life. More than that, we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received reconciliation.”

  3. Was not Jesus one of the greatest magicians that ever lived? The christian church has been terrified of its power being erroded by people actually taking their spirituality in their own hands and communicatiing through to the spirit world by passing the monopoly of the varies christian cults

  4. Christ is a consciousness, Jesus never existed in history, and speaking of Bible – it is a den of thieves and robbers. Any theologian will tell that nothing in Bible is original, evething is hijacked from other cultures, even the origin of God/Goddess is derived from other cultures. Early church fathers have stolen occult knowledge from other cultures and Christianized them as sacraments. As the story goes, Jesus came to liberate us from our prisons. How can we imagine ourselves from those prisons if we cannot respect the truth in every culture. He never formed any religion or set up rules. Humans with vested interest did. Do you follow the marketing companies or the hero of the story?

    • “Jesus never existed in history.” Truly one of the dumbest statements I’ve ever heard, and I’ve heard a lot. As to whether or not i believe in god is a constant internal struggle, but the fact that Jesus existed, and is an actual historical figure at that, is undeniable. Look at any history book regarding the matter, and they will all say the same thing. He actually existed. There is actual, historical and scientific proof, that he was a real person. Smh, please, you took the time to research just about everything else you said, so take the time to research that
