Overcoming Fear L4 part 2

Why is it dangerous to be overcome by fear and live controlled by your fears?

I would first like to begin with a quote from the book of Revelation that causes many people to question the Bible.

But those who are full of fear and without faith, the unclean and takers of life, those who do the sins of the flesh, and those who make use of evil powers or who give worship to images, and all those who are false, will have their part in the sea of ever- burning fire which is the second death. (Revelation 21:8)

Those who are full of fear (overcome by their fear, controlled by their fear) do not have access to the Kingdom of heaven. They will face the second death, the lake of fire, never ending torment. This phrase “full of fear” goes hand in hand with lack of faith. People who are overcome with fear do not live by faith. The problem with those who are overcome by fear is not just the fear itself, it is the lack of faith which leads them to be led by the desires of their sin nature.

Jesus teaches that those who live by their sin nature lack faith and are overcome by fear because their father is Satan and not God, even if they are very religious people.

42 Jesus said to them, If God were your Father you would have love for Me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of Myself, but He sent Me. 43 Why are My words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to My teaching. 44 You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false. (John 8)

Here is a simple list of those who are overcome with fear, led by their sin nature, and not children of God.

  • God is not their Father
  • They are religious but it does not impact their battle over their sin nature
  • They do not love Jesus Christ because they do not obey Him
  • They do not understand the teachings of Jesus Christ
  • They shut up their ears to the teachings of Jesus Christ, the Bible
  • Their father is the Evil One, Satan

Ephesians gives us more insight of how they live on a daily basis, controlled by the desires of their sin nature.

1 And to you did He give life, when you were dead through your wrongdoing and sins, 2 In which you were living in the past, after the ways of this present world, doing the pleasure of the lord of the power of the air, the spirit who is now working in those who go against the purpose of God; 3 Among whom we all at one time were living in the pleasures of our flesh, giving way to the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and the punishment of God was waiting for us even as for the rest. (Ephesians 2)

Again, we have a simple list of the lifestyle of those who live controlled by the lusts of their sin nature.

  • Dead in their sins (dead to the real ways of God, disobedient to God)
  • Practice an evil lifestyle,  in attitude, actions, and words
  • Controlled by the pleasures of the flesh (natural desires)
  • Controlled by the pleasures of the mind (you may not physically murder someone but you have no problem doing it in your mind, or with your words)
  • Awaiting the punishment of God because of their sins

This is all very bad news for mankind because we are all born this way, controlled by the desires of our sin nature. We have a natural tendency to fear because it is a part of our natural sinful desires. Plus, we also know that God’s punishment is coming, whether we admit it or not. Even if we have never read the Bible, we know that the following quote is true and that is why we fear death.

And because by God’s law death comes to men once, and after that they are judged; (Hebrews 9:27)

The beauty of the Bible is that God never leaves us hopeless and helpless. Yes, the situation is bad because we are naturally fearful and that fear keeps us from having life changing faith and will ultimately keep us out of the kingdom of heaven. We are children like our father, Satan, and we await his judgment until or unless something transforms our fate. This good news is found in Colossians 1

12 Giving praise to the Father who has given us a part in the heritage of the saints in light; 13 Who has made us free from the power of evil and given us a place in the kingdom of the Son of His love; 14 In whom we have our salvation, the forgiveness of sins:

God took care of the problem. He changes our family, our heritage, our present, and our future through Jesus Christ.

  • We are transformed from sinners controlled by the lust of our sin nature to saints controlled by the Holy Spirit
  • We are set free from our slavery to sin and the desires of our sin nature
  • We are placed in the kingdom of heaven, adopted into the family of God
  • We are saved from our sins, ourselves, and the judgment to come
  • We are forgiven

This is why the word Gospel literally means “good news”. This is great news yet so many do not know it and do not live by it. They are still controlled by the lusts of their sin nature, living in fear, even if they are very religious people. Are you one of those people? Would you like to be transformed? It is possible if you will step out on faith and trust God and His Word. You will be able to overcome your fear which will allow you to overcome your sin nature and live in obedience to the Lord.
