Two days ago, our family joined together to celebrate two monumental events. The first was the birth of our great country, the United States of America. The second major event was the birth of our first child, Evangelyn Abigail Brewer. She goes by Abigail which is Hebrew for “my Father is joy”, or “I rejoice in the Lord”. Evangelyn comes from the Greek word that we translate as “Gospel”. It means good news. So, every year, on the 4th of July, our family celebrates the Good News of the Gospel, that we can rejoice in the Lord because of the freedom from sin that Jesus Christ offers to us. Where do you find your joy? Have you experienced the good news of the freedom from sin’s power that Jesus offers to us? Continue reading
It is hard for me to believe that my daughter is already 2 years old and at the same time only 2 years old. It seems as if she were born yesterday and at the same time it seems as if we have had her forever. She has brought so much joy to our lives and we pray that she will be just as much of a blessing to others as she has been to us. I love you Abigail and as your name means “my father is joy” you have brought so much joy to my life in just 2 short years. Enjoy the nice bicycle that Nana and Pop got for you.
Today is a very special day in the life of our family. We just celebrated Abigail’s (our daughter) first Birthday on July 4th (we had another small celebration on that same day for the United States as well). She had so much fun with her Nana and Pop along with other family members and friends.
Today we celebrate my youngest brother, Evan’s Birthday. He turns 17 today. It is hard for me to believe that since I used to hold him the way I now hold my daughter in my arms. Time really does fly by. We are just a vapor, here for a very short time which goes by so fast.
As I reflect on these two major events I am reminded of what the Scriptures say.
A good name is to be more desired than great wealth, Favor is better than silver and gold. (Proverbs 22:1)
A good name is better than a good ointment, And the day of one’s death is better than the day of one’s birth. (Ecclesiastes 7:1)
We do not choose our birth-date nor do we choose our death-date but we do choose what happens in between those two dates. Are you building a good name during your birth-date and death-date or are you more interested in wealth and treasures? Choose this day to do as Joshua did.
. . . as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD (Joshua 24:15)
Our little Abigail is over 3 months old now. I am just amazed to see how much she changes everyday. When she smiles my heart just melts. She decides to talk to us a lot more now with her “own” words. We do not understand her but she talks like we understand everything. She likes to sing too (mommy’s girl). Being a father is amazing. As I was running around in circles one night trying to get her to stop crying I had an epiphany. I thought “I wonder if someone did this for me one time?” I sure my parents did the same. I have a greater appreciation for them now than ever before. I have found out that parents are geniuses when you are in your 20’s compared to the idiots that you thought you lived with in your teens. Thanks mom and dad!!!
As I was preparing to teach “Marriage without Regrets” the other night I had another epiphany. I realized that as husband and wife we are 2 selfish people whom God has placed together to live for each other. Then He blesses us with selfish children whom we spend the rest of our lives trying to teach not to be selfish. We see a little of what God has to go through with us and our self-centeredness.
We are in the process of moving and man does God use that time as a way to put your faith and character to the test. We boast of having self-control as a virtue of the Holy Spirit, and that is true, but if you want to see how much improvement needs to be made in your character (patience, gentleness, etc.) then move to a new location with an infant. Thank you God for helping us through. Plus I had some great illustrations to use for teaching about “Role Models: The Model Man”. I guess I will stop here. Still have some things to take to the apt. as well as work on a mid-term for seminary.
Our darling Evangelyn Abigail Brewer is finally here and we are so happy. Thank you to all who prayed for us. God is so good to us. We chose her name as a way to share the Gospel with people who ask about her. Evangelyn means “good news” in the Greek language and Abigail is Hebrew for “My Father is joy”. The good news is that through the Lord Jesus Christ we become children of God and receive His joy. What makes it even better is the fact that she was born on Independence Day which helps even more in sharing the Gospel because through Jesus Christ we become independent of our slavery to sin and dependent upon God. May the Lord bless you as you rejoice with us for the birth of our sweet little girl as well as celebrating our freedom from the bondage of sin and dependence on God.
