Freedom in Christ

freedom-1I am excited to prepare and teach this lesson during our Connect Group meeting this coming Sunday. As I have mentioned in previous posts, we are walking through the entire Bible over a three year period, from Genesis through Revelation. Last Sunday, we jumped into the book of Exodus. Genesis was amazing and I am excited to see what Exodus holds for us. We just saw how Moses answered God’s Great Calling in Exodus 3-4. This week, we are going to see how God extended that Great Calling to the children of Israel through Moses and how God extends that Great Calling to us today, through Jesus Christ. Our passages for consideration today are Exodus 7 and Exodus 12. Continue reading

The purpose of Communion

I am getting ready to lead my weekly staff Bible study and I want to write out the lesson here, giving me an opportunity to think through what I want to teach. Currently, we are studying the Biblical Names of God. Our current Name for God is Jehovah-jireh. Today, I am taking a break to study the topic of the Lord’s Supper. I am afraid that there is much confusion in our church today on why we take communion and what its purpose is. I would like to clarify that from the Word of God. I do not want to share what I have been “taught”, think, feel, or believe. Instead, I want to examine the Scriptures to see what God actually teaches on the subject. There are many different misconceptions today because so few actually study the topic as described in the Word. They just hear others teach on the subject and take the second hand knowledge at face value. In order to better understand this topic, take a moment to read I Corinthians 11. I included the entire chapter because the context is very important. When teaching on the Lord’s Supper, many teachers just start with verse 23. We need to see the entire context to understand what the Apostle Paul had in mind when writing about communion. Continue reading

The seriousness of entering into covenant with God

In the last article we looked at Christian baptism, its importance, the process leading to baptism, and why it was instituted by God. In this article I would like to take a look at the connection between covenant and the Lord’s Supper (the Eucharist). By looking at these 2 Biblical elements, we will learn just how serious choosing to accept Christ as your Lord and Savior really is. Choosing to become a Christian is not like signing up for fire insurance to get out of hell if you find yourself there one day. Continue reading
